Cleaner Q & A

How do I properly clean my dentures after I eat?

Unlike your natural teeth, it’s best not to clean dentures while they’re in your mouth. After each meal, remove your dentures and rinse them in warm water. This helps dislodge food particles and prevent permanent stains.

Dentures are made from acrylics and are prone to warp when exposed to high temperatures, so never wash your dentures with hot water.

Dentures are delicate and easily broken. When cleaning your dentures in the sink, be sure to line the counter with a towel and add some water to the sink to break their fall if you drop them.

What are the best kinds of cleaning products for my dentures?

Sometimes, rinsing with warm water is not enough. For deeper cleaning, use liquid hand soap or dish detergent.

Special denture-cleaning pastes are available from most pharmacies and supermarkets. These are for external use only and should never be used to clean dentures while they are in your mouth. Be sure to look for the American Dental Association’s seal of approval before buying any commercially sold cleaning products.

Avoid regular toothpaste because it contains abrasives that can scratch and erode the surface of acrylic dentures. Also, avoid any products with bleaches or whiteners because they can weaken and discolor your dentures. The chlorine used in some of these substances can tarnish or corrode any metal components in your dentures.

How do I clean and store my dentures at night?

Before going to bed, remove your dentures and soak them in a cleaning solution overnight. This cleans, disinfects, and maintains the suppleness of your dentures and prevents brittleness. A variety of over-the-counter tablets, liquids, and powders are available. Denturist Grant Smith can advise you on the most effective products for your kind of dentures.
